World Car-Free Day: Eco-Friendly alternatives for a greener future
September 22nd, it’s World Car-Free Day. This day reminds us of the significant impact that automobiles have on our environment. It’s the perfect opportunity to explore planet-friendly transportation alternatives and reflect on how our individual choices can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
At Ricova, we use liquefied natural gas-powered on 50 of our trucks for the collection of residual and recyclable materials, a fuel with a lower environmental impact.
1. The Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM)
The REM is a remarkable innovation in public transportation. It’s a network of fast and efficient electric light rail that connects regions in Montreal. Using the REM is a fantastic way to reduce your carbon footprint.
You can learn more about how to use it https://rem.info/en/travelling/how-to-use-the-rem
Did you know that Ricova’s head office is located just a few minutes walking distance from a REM station? Many of our employees ride it!
2. Bicycling
Bicycling is one of the most eco-friendly modes of transportation. Hop on your bike and explore your city emission-free. Make sure to wear a helmet, a good coat, follow traffic rules, and share the road safely with others.
3. Walking
Walking is simple, free, and environmentally friendly. If your destination is within a reasonable distance, opt for walking. It’s good for your health and the planet. Take the time to admire your surroundings and reconnect with nature.
4. Carpooling
If you can’t completely avoid using a car, consider carpooling. Sharing a ride with others reduces the number of vehicles on the road and saves fuel. There are even apps to facilitate carpooling in your area. Here are some popular carpooling apps:
- Covoiturage.ca: https://www.covoiturage.ca/
- Amigo Express: https://www.amigoexpress.com/
- Blablacar: https://www.blablacar.fr/
- Poparide: https://www.poparide.com/
Explore these apps to find carpooling opportunities near you and contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of your commutes.
On this World Car-Free Day, let’s choose eco-friendly alternatives for our commutes. Every small effort counts in reducing air pollution, traffic congestion, and greenhouse gas emissions. Together, we can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future. So, let’s step out of our cars, try new ways of getting around, and inspire others to do the same.
